Babelsberg Studios is rooted in a success story, which has produced film history for over 95 years. Babelsberg’s first functioning 100-acre plot studio was built in 1912 by the Bioscop Company. It was here, where the Studio’s success story began producing films the same year.
After the Second World War, the era of DEFA (Deutsche Film AG) began. DEFA produced over 700 movies by the late 1980’s like the cult classic “The Legend of Paul and Paula“ and children’s fairy tales such as “The Story of Little Mook“ and “The Cold Heart“.
Located in close proximity to Germany’s capital, Berlin, Babelsberg quickly drew the attention of international movie productions. Babelsberg has witnessed the birth of many stars and the groundbreaking achievements of famed directors. Fritz Lang made movie history with his production of “Metropolis” and Marlene Dietrich celebrated worldwide fame from her role in “The Blue Angel”. Film icons like Greta Garbo, Heinz Rühmann, Lillian Harvey and Hans Albers all followed with great success, as they were deeply inspired by the charm and flair of Babelsberg.
